Story
Japanese
While out on an aimless adventure, Sonic and Tails come across a giant electronic billboard advertising the World Grand Prix, a race to determine the fastest person on the planet. Tails becomes giddy over the prospect, eager to see how he stacks up against the world's speediest. Sonic, not being particularly interested in racing, is less receptive until he spots Eggman's name on the list of participants. He immediately dashes off to register, leaving a surprised Tails to catch up.

News of the World Grand Prix spreads quickly, and when Knuckles hears of Sonic's participation, he signs up himself with the aim of settling their vendetta once and for all. Amy Rose, meanwhile, signs up for yet another chance to seduce her blue beau. The whole sequence of events is monitored by a spy satellite belonging to none other than Dr. Eggman, who is tickled pink that Sonic has fallen right into his latest trap. It seems that the bad Doc has detected the 7 Chaos Emeralds along the route of the World Grand Prix and would just as soon let Sonic and co handle the grunt labour of hunting them out. Once the Emeralds have been located, appropriating them should be a breeze with Eggman's new secret weapons...

The Race is On!
Sonic and Knuckles are enjoying a little time off from adventuring. The trip they have planned will be a nice, relaxing vacation. Or so they think...

Tails spots a huge sign alongside the road they are currently travelling on. It is a recruiting advertisement for the World Grand Prix. "Sonic! Sonic! Look, there's going to be a huge race with all the best racers in the world. What a great opportunity for you to show your speed and compete with the other great runners!"

Sonic thinks for a moment. He's the world's fastest runner, but participating in races is not really his interest. Something on the sign, however, catches Sonic's eye. Dr. Robotnik, Sonic's arch-enemy, is participating in the race. Sonic races off into the distance. "Wait Sonic! Wait for me!" Tails shouts to his friend.

Miles above the sign, a spy satellite focuses on Sonic and Tails. Dr. Robotnik snickers in delight. "Now that you have fallen into my trap, Sonic, I will finally have the Chaos Emeralds, and beat you at the same time. With my new hover machine, and these..." Dr. Robotnik looks to his left, and a row of gleaming eyes gaze back at him. "Nothing can go wrong! Hahahahahahaha....." Little does Sonic know that Dr. Robotnik has learned of the location of the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic is not the only one who will be racing with Dr. Robotnik. Sonic's rival, Knuckles, has learned that Sonic will be participating in a very important race. Knuckles never turns down a chance to be around Sonic when the action starts.

Amy will be there too. After secretly overhearing Dr. Robotnik's plans, she also will be racing to find the Chaos Emeralds.

In Sonic R, you get the chance to be one of the five Sonic characters in a four-course 3D race. Race quickly, but remember to look for items which will help you along your way. And lastly, find those Chaos Emeralds!

Notes
* This is a what is probably a mock-up cover for the US Saturn version of Sonic R. It is possible and pretty likely that this was never going to be the true cover but one was not ready yet in time for the adverts, so this on (using the then title art, edited a bit) was done. Of course, often this days, the Covers can be designed way before the game is ready so it is also possible that this cover might have been an idea which they changed. Again, it features Metal Sonic, who was meant to be a hidden character in the game.
Other Releases
Release date:- Unknown
Area: -Brazil
Company:- Tec Toy
* TecToy yet again had the Brazilian release of this game but it's cover appears changed more then others.. in fact, this is a cardboard case, much like a Game Gear Box. The Cover features a simpler look to the US release, but has an added White Bar on the Right as well as the bottom, with the Tec Toy Logo and all white bars have a game gear link Strip, though in this case it's a light gray.
The Lost Features
Team Pose!
Early Versions of Sonic R feature a completely different piece of Artwork for the Title Screen. This piece was seen a lot as the early cover art for the game and was believed changed because it showed Metal Sonic, a character which was a Hidden Unlockable character.
